crying child looking out over the mining pits at Panique in Philippines, and in the distance an apparently pristine lake that is in fact contaminated by cyanide and mercury runoff from the artisanal mining operations. The only sign that all not as it seems is the boy's anguished face. His downward gaze draws you into the people crawling around the mine below

a kind of grace and resilience, amidst what is literally a pile of trash. We see so many images of "poor" Africans and I felt like Micah's series was framed through a different lens that represents beauty and light, without ignoring the hardship. It also reminds me of the responses we received from students in LA where we presented the work. I asked them to share what words came to mind when they looked at it and they said: hope, strength, empathy, calm, challenge, power. And then I asked them how they would convince an editor in the US to run a story about a dumpsite in Kenya

The angle is striking--looking up through the greenery against the bright sky

man has been through and is experiencing while seeing his home for the first time since it was destroyed during the fighting. It almost looks like he has to hold up the cracked and broken wall with his bare hand

Between the Lines: Facial Tattoos and the Chaouia," her project on the tradition of facial tattoos among elderly women in Algeria--their origin, their meanings, and the reasons for their gradual disappearance. I'm very drawn to this woman's face--she appears to be a warm and wise person

love the rosy sky and the beach in this image. The sticks in the sand and the mountains in the background give it a somewhat melancholy other-worldliness, but the playing children make it feel lighthearted as well

This photo captures this sense of waiting, a feeling that the world shares while we see what happens in newly-opened Burma. But questions remain: Will it close its doors again, like it has done before? Will the government address human rights violations and ethnic violence? Knight illustrates this by creating a gauzy black and white still, showcasing the guards' folded arms and questioning gazes

lines of people wait outside a labor center that has been turned into a homeless shelter in Kamagasaki, a neighborhood of Osaka. Though this picture was taken in a city over 6,000 miles away, the same scene plays out in cities across the United States, where despite incredible wealth, entire communities are relegated to the margins to occupy homeless shelters, street corners, detention centers and prisons

an elderly man laying in his Paryang Hospital bed in Unity State. His back is turned to the camera and he appears to be sleeping

the Tibetan Plateau sought in part to document the wonder of the natural world before it is too late--or perhaps in time to save it

[Youssou N'dour] was prevented from running for president--so he's candidate turned protestor. But he looks presidential in contrast to the chaos around him

from Afghanistan shows a deep connection with the people and the country that many photojournalists strive for but few attain. This particular story, 'Afghanistan: On Love and Suicide,' struck a chord because although the story is innately sad, it is also hopeful. It is a beautiful thing to see women supporting one another and finding an outlet in the art of poetry. This particular photo feels symbolic of the story as a whole--women passing through the shadows, secretive but standing together

Ahmed's tears, which mourn his dead father who was killed by Syrian army snipers, fell on a park transformed into a cemetery in the city of Idlib, which had been under siege by government forces since March. The child's cry mingled with the cries of the Free Syrian Army fighters, the elderly, his schoolmates and a community devastated by almost two years of this conflict, which started in the framework of the Arab Spring and transformed into a cruel civil war. This is quite a direct picture—one that tries to approach this armed conflict in a very human and simple level, amid a conflict fraught with very profound geopolitical interests in today's world
group of fighters with Ghaith Abdul-Ahad, a great Iraqi journalist. The men took up position in a family living room. One rebel sat on the chair eating a chocolate bar, the commander looking out the window to scout the area while a rebel fired from the window. They told me the room was a former Syrian army position and that they had killed three soldiers in the house when they took over the building earlier that day
It was like any other spring day in North Texas — hot, humid and the weather was ripe for a classic Midwest storm. Within hours, 13 confirmed tornadoes touched down across the Dallas-Fort Worth area

was still trying to make sense of why a gunman would walk into a crowded Aurora movie theater and fire randomly. Twelve people were killed and 58 wounded. It was hard for me to imagine a crime of this magnitude in a movie theater — a place that I myself go to escape life for a moment. One of the lives lost that night was of Jonathan Blunk, a five-year U.S. Navy veteran, who left behind a wife and two children. In this photograph, Chantel Blunk, Jonathan's wife, paused on the tarmac at Denver International Airport before boarding the same plane as her husband's body. The plane was bound for their home in Reno, Nev., where a full military funeral would take place. As this was occurring, a faint rainbow appeared over the hearse.
In a moment of sorrow, a glimpse of Chantel's innocence and youth appeared despite the overwhelming process of military tradition and personal chaos she was trapped in

Sometimes it's hard to remember who that person is at the podium—that [politicians] are real people. We had been to a couple campaign events that day. Here, President Obama was waiting to be introduced before going on stage at a campaign stop in Windham, N.H. As President, you spend a lot of time waiting for people to introduce you, so that's always the best time for photographers to be around him. He was talking to staff and Secret Service and seemed really at ease. I don't remember what he was laughing about

2012: The Year in Photos

2012 was an eventful year, from big events like the London Summer Olympics and the U.S. presidential race, to regional conflicts in the Middle East and Africa, to smaller issues closer to home. Reverberations from last year's transformative Arab Spring still heavily affect Syria and Egypt; and the slow recovery from the recent global economic crisis brought bitter austerity measures to parts of Europe, leading to widespread protests. Collected here is Part 1 of a three-part photo summary of the last year, covering its first four months

The Costa Concordia was on a trip around the Mediterranean when it apparently hit a reef near the island of Giglio on Friday, only a few hours into its voyage, as passengers were sitting down for dinner. Captain Francesco Schettino, who reportedly abandoned the ship shortly after it sank, lost his job and still potentially faces manslaughter charges

Collected here is Part 2 of a three-part photo summary of the last year, covering May through August

Star trails, city lights, and lightning strikes appear in this composite of a series of images photographed from a mounted camera on the International Space Station, from approximately 240 miles above Earth. Expedition 31 Flight Engineer (and photographer) Don Pettit: "My star trail images are made by taking a time exposure of about 10 to 15 minutes. However, with modern digital cameras, 30 seconds is about the longest exposure possible, due to electronic detector noise effectively snowing out the image. To achieve the longer exposures I do what many amateur astronomers do. I take multiple 30-second exposures, then 'stack' them using imaging software, thus producing the longer exposure." A total of 18 images photographed by the astronaut-monitored stationary camera were combined to create this composite. (NASA/Don Pettit) #
