Richard Swanson was hit by a truck 250 miles into a charity bid to dribble a football from Seattle to the Brazil World Cup.
A driver has been arrested over the death of a man who was hit from behind by a pick-up truck while dribbling a football from the US to Brazil for charity.
Richard Swanson had planned to dribble the ball for more than a year through 11 countries to Sao Paolo in time for the opening World Cup 2014 game on June 12.
The 42-year-old from Seattle was hit while walking south along a busy road near Lincoln City on May 14.
He was just 250 miles into his 10,000-mile (16,000km) challenge to promote the One World Football Project, which donates footballs to developing countries.
Mr Swanson set off from Seattle on May 1 and was mainly staying with strangers who befriended him along the route.
Police in Oregon detained Scott Van Hiatt, of Neskowin, on Monday on a charge of criminally negligent homicide, which carries a maximum prison term of 10 years.
He is due to appear at Lincoln County Circuit Court later.
