Deaths, injuries and arrests during Friday protests in Egypt

The National Coalition to Support Legitimacy said in a statement released in the early hours of Saturday that protesters have not been intimidated by Friday protests’ casualties.

The statement comes after the coalition, which is made up of 11 different unions and parties that support ousted President Mohamed Morsi, organised protests across the country on Friday under the slogan, “the people protect their revolution.”

Two protesters died, one in Kafr El-Batikh in Damietta Governorate and another in Alexandria. The coalition said the Damietta death was caused by an attack on a march using live ammunition.

In Alexandria, the coalition said “the putschist militias” sent thugs with melee weapons and birdshot to the marching protesters leading to injuries. It added that 30 protesters were arrested in Alexandria alone.

The Ministry of Health had reported on Friday night that 24 were injured including over a dozen in Alexandria, four in Damietta and five in Gharbeya.

In Tanta, Gharbeya, security forces fired teargas at protesters in an attempt to control the clashes that broke out between security forces and protesters, state-run MENA reported. Calm was restored in Tanta in the late hours of Friday and 26 protesters were arrested.

The coalition also reported an attack using live ammunition on protesters in Salam City in Cairo and teargas fired on protesters in Assiut Governorate in Upper Egypt.

State-run Ahram reported 14 injured in clashes between supporters of Morsi and residents in Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate.

The coalition asserted in its statement the continuation of “the people’s revolt against the coup…under the slogan ‘the coup is terrorism.’”
