بحيرة إيري هي إحدى البحيرات العظمى الخمس في أمريكا الشمالية، وهي في الترتيب الحادي عشر كأكبر بحيرة في العالم من حيث مساحة السطح، تعتبر هذه البحيرة مصدر لكثير من المنتجات التجارية التي يتم نقلها عن طريق المياه، كما تعتبر مصدر هام للملاحة والصناعات التحويلية،

خلال السنوات الماضية، شهدت هذه البحيرة عملية إتلاف كبيرة بسبب عمليات الصيد الجائر والتلوث الصناعي، وهو ما أدى إلى نمو الطحالب السامة بها بشكل كبير وسريع.

تعوم الطحالب على السطح وتتكاثر بسرعة، مما يتسبب في منع الضوء من الوصول للكائنات الحية التي تعيش تحت الماء وبالتالى تموت هذه الكائنات و تغوص إلى القاع، حيث تتحلل وتمتص الأكسجين الموجود في الماء مما يتسبب في تكوين مناطق ميتة بسبب عدم قدرة معظم الحيوانات المائية على البقاء على قيد الحياة. وفي عام 2011، سُجل أكبر عدد من الأسماك النافقة في هذه البحيرة

Lake Erie is one of the five Great Lakes of North America , which is in the order atheist ten largest lake in the world in terms of surface area , this is the lake source for many commercial products that are transported by water, it's also considered an important source of navigation and manufacturing industries ,

During the past years , the lake has seen this process because of the great damage of overfishing and industrial pollution , which has led to the growth of toxic algae out dramatically and rapidly.

Floating algae on the surface and multiply rapidly , causing prevent light from reaching the organisms that live underwater and thus die of these objects and sink to the bottom, where decompose and suck the oxygen in the water , causing the formation of dead zones due to the inability of most aquatic animals to survive alive . In 2011, the highest number of dead fish in this lake
