IF YOU DON'T REGISTER TO VOTE . YOU ARE TAKING THE COLOUR OUT OF BRITAIN

The white paint symbolises the colour being ‘taken out of Britain’ if black and ethnic minority groups don’t vote

General Election 2015: Black celebrities turn white to encourage minority ethnic groups to vote

Black celebrities such as hip-hop artist Tinie Tempah and Paralympic champion Ade Adepitan have turned themselves white as part of a new campaign to encourage minority ethnic groups to vote in the upcoming election.

David Harewood says feeling unrepresented is a reason to vote

The campaign, which was produced by Operation Black Vote (OBV), features black stars with their faces partially or fully-painted white – symbolising the colour being ‘taken out of Britain’ if African British and Asian British communities don’t vote.

Tinie Tempah and Ade Adepitan are joined by Homeland actor David Harewood and former International footballer Sol Campbell for the campaign.

28 percent of black Britons were unregistered to vote in the last election

‘I’ve done some fantastic things in my career but one of the best things I’ve ever done is register to vote,’ Harewood said.

‘Because if you’re black or Asian and you haven’t registered to vote, you’re actually taking the colour out of Britain – and quite frankly that looks ridiculous.

‘I know you don’t feel represented by politicians. But the thing is if you’re not registered to vote, they won’t ever listen, it’s a chicken and egg.

‘Because as soon as you register, they listen. You matter.’

Black and minority ethnic groups could affect the outcome in 168 marginal seats

Campaign director Simon Woolley said that black and minority ethnic (BME) groups could affect the outcome in 168 marginal seats.

‘I think there is a great deal of cynicism out there amongst black and minority ethnic communities that we feel we are powerless,’ he said.

‘We have demonstrated that with those marginal seats we are far from powerless, we are powerful, we can decide who had the keys to Downing Street.’

Political blogger Tim Wigmore reports that ethnic minorities were three times less likely to be registered to vote than white Britons at the last election, with 28 percent of black people unregistered.
