- Sanlitun, also known as “Sanlitur” in Beijing dialect, is one of the best known and most popular bar streets located in the embassy district in eastern Beijing.At left, a band performs at one of the clubs at Sanlitun.Beijing was anticipating 500,000 Olympic visitors, and thousands of customers to Sanlitun, a favorite of Westerners because of its heavily American and European influenced bars. Above, Dutch tourists dance on the tables at a Sanlitun club.Most of the small, privately owned bars in the district serve Western cuisine by day, and after-dinner drinks and live music, particularly rock, at night.Ahead of the Olympics, police, out in force, cleaned up Sanlitun — no drugs, no gambling and no prostitution. - A convoy of flatbed trucks and yellow buses carrying badly needed food aid to beleaguered Georgians rumbled through a Russian checkpoint on Wednesday. He was able to pass the Russian checkpoints and enter seven villages that he hadn’t gained access to in the past few days. Above, a Russian soldier guarded a checkpoint on the main road between Gori and Tskhinvali.When the aid arrived, a local Georgian drove to the checkpoint at Tirdznissi, Georgia, to see what was going on, while a Russian tank patrolled. Incidents of robberies and violence after Russian troops took over the area spread panic among local Georgians.Mr. Dworzak once witnessed a car theft by the South Ossetia irregulars, which was carried out “in a calm way” as an irregular pointed his gun at a local driver. The driver immediately understood what was going on and abandoned his car.
