Islamic Jihad movement calls for mass demo Sunday against judges

The Islamic Jihad movement has called for a mass demonstration called “Purging the Judiciary” in front of the High Court on Sunday to demonstrate against the judges’ strike.

Mohamed Abu Samra, secretary general of the movement, said the striking judges are infringing on the people’s rights at court. No one is above the law, especially after the revolution, he added.

Abu Samra also called for preventing prosecutors, judicial authorities and their employees from discussing political issues or talking to the media, as stipulated by law. He also accused some judges of illegally appointing their sons to judicial positions, and demanded that certain judges be investigated on charges of illicit gains.

The Islamic Jihad movement recently changed the name of its political front from the Safety and Development Party to the Islamic Party in anticipation of running in the upcoming parliamentary elections. The party is considering forming an alliance with other Islamist parties, such as Jama’a al-Islamiya, the Hazemoun movement and the Salafi Current, Abu Samra said.
