لدى رهبان التبت عادات وتقاليد خاصة بهم عندما يقومون بصنع هذه اللوحات الرائعة من الرمال الملونة، ولكن ما يميز هذه العادات هي صعوبة تنفيذها لأن الرهبان لا يستخدمون إياً من الألوان الصناعية ولكنهم يستخرجون كل هذه الألوان من الطبيعة المحيطة بهم.

فمثلاً يقوم أحد الرهبان بتسلق الجبال ورمي حجر ضخم من فوق مرتفع حتى يصبح مجرد حطام ثم ينزل من على المرتفع ويقوم بتجميع هذا الحطام حتى يستخدم لون فتات الحجر في تلوين الرمال، يقوم كل أربعة رهبان بتشكيل مجموعة فنية حيث تقسم الأدوار حيث يقوم أثنين من الرهبان بتلوين الرمل والبقية تضعه بشكل متناسق فى أعمال غاية فى التعقيد والجمال. 

والجدير بالذكر أن الرسم بالرمال عند رهبان التبت له طابع خاص حيث يستعملون الرموز الهندسية مثل الدائرة والمثلث والمستطيل والتى يحمل كل منها دلالة خاصة فى الديانة البوذية التى يؤمنون بها.

ويقول رهبان المعبد أنهم يحاولون أسترضاء الإلة بوذا بعمل هذه التماثيل الرملية كقربان له ثم يقومون بتدمير كل هذه الأعمال الذين قاموا بها بأيديهم وأتقنوها إلى حد الكمال حتى يبرهنوا لإلاههم أنهم يستطعون بالتضحية بكل ما هو نفيس وغالي من أجل كسب رضاه عليهم.
