استقر فريق من العلماء الروس على السبب الحقيقي وراء ظهور حفرة غامضة هائلة بعمق 80 مترًا، في شمال سيبيريا بمنطقة يطلق عليها "نهاية العالم".

وقال أندريه بليخانوف، وهو باحث بارز في مركز البحث العلمي في القطب الشمالي، إن الثقب الغامض الذي ظهر بشكل مباغت في المنطقة الغنية بالغاز في وقت سابق من هذا الأسبوع، قد نشأ على الأرجح نتيجة لتراكم الضغط المفرط تحت الأرض، ونظرا لتغير درجات الحرارة في المنطقة.

وقال "80 في المائة من الحفرة تتكون من الجليد، ولا توجد آثار للانفجار تدعم احتمال أن نيزك قد ضرب المنطقة".

كانت العديد من النظريات حاولت تفسير هذه الظاهرة الجغرافية غير العادية والتي وقعت في منطقة الإنتاج الرئيسية لإمدادات الغاز الروسي إلى أوربا. 

فالبعض فسر ذلك بسقوط نيزك كبير ضرب الأرض، ولجأ البعض إلى تفسيرات خيالية تتعلق بهبوط كائنات فضائية، فيما قال خبراء إن ظاهرة الاحتباس الحراري تسببت في انفجار تحت الأرض بسبب ذوبان الجليد، واختلاط الغاز والملح والماء وهذا يفسر آثار الاحتراق الموجودة حول فوهة من الحفرة من الداخل.
