The incident happened at around 10:30 p.m. local time on Thursday when a truck drove into a crowd at the Promenade des Anglais, where fireworks were taking place. The crash prompted hundreds of people to run from the area in panic, fearing an attack.

وقالت السلطات الفرنسية ان ما جرى في نيس من اعتداء ودعت المواطنين لملازمة اماكنهم.

Mayor Christian Estrosi said on Twitter that "dozens" of people had been killed, but provided no specific figures. "Dear Nice, the driver of the truck appears to have left dozens of people dead. Stay for the moment inside your home. More information to follow," he said.

Details about what led to the crash were not immediately available, but local authorities said a terrorist attack appeared likely, prompting the city to warn residents to stay at home. Other details are not yet available.

Bastille Day - formally known as La fête nationale - is celebrated on July 14 and marks France's National Day.

قال تلفزيون (بي.اف.ام) الفرنسي، إن السلطات المحلية تتعامل مع حادث دهس المواطنين بمدينة نيس الفرنسية، باعتباره هجوما وتدعو الناس إلى التزام بيوتهم.

كان 30شخصا على الأقل قد قتلوا، وأصيب 100 آخرون في مدينة نيس بجنوب فرنسا عندما دهست شاحنة حشدا من المواطنين أثناء إحتفالات اليوم الوطني مساء أمس الخميس.

Nice était en fête ce jeudi soir, lorsqu'un camion a foncé intentionnellement sur la foule peu après le feu d'artifice. Une attaque sanglante, qui selon le dernier bilan a tué au moins 80 personnes. Plusieurs témoins racontent ce qu'ils ont vu à L'Express.

Un massacre, en pleines festivités de la fête nationale. Ce jeudi soir, un camion a foncé dans une foule compacte, venue sur la Promenade des Anglais pour voir le feu d'artifice du 14 juillet. Christophe Kulikowski, le président de l'association des journalistes niçois à Paris, était à Nice ce soir. "J'ai emmené mes filles au restaurant. Nous sommes partis tôt, pour profiter du feu d'artifice à la maison", raconte-t-il à L'Express. Il habite dans les hauteurs, à environ un kilomètre du lieu de l'attaque, avec une vue dégagée sur le front de mer. 

Ce jeudi soir, le spectacle a été supplanté par l'horreur. Les feux d'artifice étaient terminés depuis cinq ou dix minutes lorsque tout a basculé. "J'ai d'abord entendu trois ou quatre détonations assez fortes", poursuit-il. Puis la file de véhicules de police. Et les scènes de panique. "La ville s'est vidée d'elle-même, nous sommes tous sous le choc." 

"Le camion de la mort"

Journaliste à Nice Matin, Damien Allemand était à ce moment-là au plus près du camion. Il est passé à quelques mètres de lui, écrit-il dans un post de blog. Et toujours la même histoire. "C'était une soirée cool", dit-il. Puis l'invraisemblable. "Ce camion de la mort est passé à quelques mètres de moi et je n'ai pas réalisé. J'ai vu des corps voler comme des quilles de bowling sur son passage. Entendu des bruits, des hurlements que je n'oublierai jamais. J'étais tétanisé. Je n'ai pas bougé. J'ai suivi ce corbillard des yeux."

Massimo était aussi en famille jeudi soir pour profiter du spectacle. Il a emmené sa femme, ses enfants et la petite amie de l'un de ses fils. C'est peut-être une glace qui lui a permis d'éviter le pire. "Après les feux d'artifice on a décidé d'aller s'acheter des glaces, détaille-t-il à L'Express. En marchant, on a vu un mouvement de panique, tout le monde a commencé à courir. Nous avons aussi vu le camion, mais nous ne savions pas s'il se trouvait sur la route ou s'il était sur la Promenade. Nous sommes alors stupéfaits, il est impossible de réfléchir." Alors ils ont couru, comme tout le monde. 

"J'ai vu une petite fille au sol"

La priorité, à ce moment-là, est de se mettre à l'abri. "On a vu des personnes âgées tomber au sol, incapables de courir. J'ai vu une ville en guerre. Nous avons pu entrer dans un hôtel, ou deux jeunes ont eu la gentillesse d'accepter de faire rentrer une vingtaine de personnes, continue Massimo. Je crois que c'est le seul moment où nous nous sommes réellement sentis en sécurité." Mais des rumeurs circulent dans la ville. Elles évoquent notamment de possibles prises d'otages dans des hôtels. Massimo et sa famille sont donc ressortis. Deux anglais les ont pris en voiture, pour les ramener chez eux, "à huit dans une toute petite voiture". 

D'autres ont dû patienter davantage, en se réfugiant dans les restaurants ouverts tout le long de la Promenade des Anglais. "Beaucoup de gens sont arrivés dans notre établissement, confirme Flory, une employée. "Les policiers nous ont ordonné de rester à l'intérieur, un hélicoptère devait se poser. Nous sommes tous choqués. Dehors, j'ai vu une petite fille au sol. Elle s'est faite écraser par le camion". 

Police are reporting that approximately 30 people were killed in the attack and as many as 100 have been injured. Apparently police and the driver of the truck exchanged gunfire which appears to have been what finally stopped the driver of the truck. More details to come.

A truck crashed into a crowd of people celebrating Bastille Day in Nice, France, on July 14, with the city’s former mayor saying “tens” were killed in an apparent terrorist attack.

وكان مكتب المدعي العام الفرنسي اعلن منذ قليل، ان هناك احتجاز رهائن، بقرب موقع حادث دهس مواطنيين بنيس عشية الاحتفال بـ"العيد القومي" الفرنسي.

وفي نفس السياق، أعلنت وسائل الاعلام الفرنسية ارتفاع عدد القتلي الى 73 شخصا بحسب ماجاء في خبر عاجل بسكاي نيوز نقلا عن وسائل اعلام فرنسية.

CNN is reporting the occupants of the truck exchanged gunfire with police. It is not known if anyone else was shot.

Photos and videos posted on social media show bodies lying in the street and there are reports of dozens injured.

The large box truck drove into the crowd at the Promenade des Anglais, witnesses said. The former mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, who is now a regional official, said there “appeared to be dozens of deaths,” said NBC News. In French, Estrosi Tweeted, according to NBC: “Dear Nice, the driver of a truck appears to have made dozens of deaths. Stay for the moment to your home. More info to come.”

Reports are still unfolding, but ISIS is already posting photographs of the attack. Accounts are unfolding fast and disseminating over social media; details could change as more is known. Bastille Day is France’s national holiday, honoring the storming of the Bastille prison in the 1789 French Revolution.

Videos from a purported Islamic State attack at the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, France on July 14 celebrators has been reported. A truck loaded with gunmen allegedly drove into a crowd. CNN is reporting “dozens dead.”

Is the Islamic State behind the attack? Right now it’s not officially confirmed. However, Terrorism Research & Analysis Consortium reports that ISIS terrorist accounts are posting about it.

A tweet sent out by an ISIS-supporting Twitter account links the Nice attack as retaliation for the death of Abu Omar al-Shishani, a Georgian Chechen commander of the Islamic State that ISIS recently admitted had been killed.

Truck was loaded with arms

Christian Estrosi, president of the region, says the truck in Nice was loaded with arms and grenades, according to AP.

Le Figaro reports that, according to the interior ministry, investigators are currently looking for potential accomplice but confirms that there was no hostage taking.

France’s Itele TV channel is quoting an unnamed police source who says the death toll is now 73.

Driver of the lorry is dead

The interior ministry has confirmed that the driver of the truck, which ploughed through crowds on the Nice promenade, has been neutralised.

Francois Hollande heads to crisis centre

The French president is heading to the interior ministry’s crisis centre, Reuters reports.

The French presidency said on its Twitter feed that the government had activated the inter-ministerial crisis centre following the incident in Nice.

The US president Barack Obama has been appraised of the situation and will be updated as appropriate, the White House says.

Nice prosecutor's office says 60 feared dead

The Nice prosecutor’s office is being quoted by the i-Télé TV channel that 60 people are now feared dead.

A witness has told the Associated Press that he saw the truck driver emerge from the vehicle with a gun and start shooting after ploughing into the crowd.

Wassim Bouhlel, a Nice native who spoke to the agency near the city’s Promenade du Paillon, said: “There was carnage on the road. Bodies everywhere.”

Sebastien Humbert, the prefect for the Alpes-Maritime area has told BFM TV: “A truck rammed into the crowd over a long distance, which explains this extremely heavy toll.” According to Reuters, Humbert said the truck driver had been shot dead and that he was treating the incident as an attack at present.

The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, has tweeted: “On behalf of all Parisians, all of our fraternal support [goes] to the people of Nice. Our cities are united.”

British security and government officials are monitoring the situation in Nice, as the seriousness of the incident escalated.

The initial details suggest a tactic that jihadi propaganda has suggested for several years, with a vehicle ploughing into a crowd. For instance, Inspire magazine – affiliated with al-Qaida – urged the tactic several years ago.

There are two immediate direct consequences for the UK if the attack is confirmed as a terrorist incident: fears about the decision by terrorists to use the tactic and the fact that past attacks overseas have led to increase in hate incidents directed at Muslims in Britain.

A witness is telling BFM TV that he heard shots fired but that he could see nothing of the driver of the truck. It was unclear who fired the shots the witness referred to.
