Turkey's parliament speaker says all political parties 'reject coup'

Turkish Parliament Speaker İsmail Kahraman said in a televised speech late Friday that all parties, including the opposition, reject the ongoing coup attempt after the army announced earlier that they took over the country, local media reported.

Turkey army says it seizes power; Erdogan says 'We will overcome this'

Turkey's military said on Friday it had seized power, but President Tayyip Erdogan said the attempted coup would be put down.

If successful, the overthrow of Erdogan, who has ruled Turkey since 2003, would be one of the biggest shifts in the Middle East in years, transforming one of the most important U.S. allies in the region while war rages on its border.

"We will overcome this," Erdogan said, speaking by mobile phone to the Turkish sister station of CNN. He called on his followers to take to the streets to defend his government and said the coup plotters would pay a heavy price.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said the elected government remained in office. However, it appeared that those behind the coup had the upper hand initially.

Aiports were shut, access to Internet social media sites was cut off, and troops sealed off the two bridges over the Bosphorus in Istanbul, one of which was still lit up red, white and blue in solidarity with victims of the Bastille Day truck attack in France a day earlier.

Warplanes and helicopters roared over the capital Ankara.

Soldiers took control of TRT state television, which announced a countrywide curfew and martial law. An announcer read a statement on the orders of the military that accused the government of eroding the democratic and secular rule of law. The country would be run by a "peace council" that would ensure the safety of the population, the statement said.

TRT later went off the air.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking jointly after talks in Moscow, both said they hoped bloodshed would be avoided. The U.S. State Department said Americans in Turkey should shelter indoors. Other countries issued similar advice.

Turkey, a NATO member with the second biggest military in the Western alliance, is one of the most important allies of the United States in the fight against Islamic State, which seized swathes of neighbouring Syria and Iraq.

Turkey is one of the main backers of opponents of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in that country's civil war, host to 2 million Syrian refugees and launchpad for the biggest influx of migrants to Europe since World War Two.

Celebratory gunfire erupted in Syria's capital Damascus as word got out that Erdogan had been toppled, and people took the streets to celebrate there and in the government-held section of the divided city of Aleppo.

Turkey has been at war with Kurdish separatists, and has suffered numerous bombing and shooting attacks this year, including an attack two weeks ago by Islamists at Istanbul's main airport that killed more than 40 people.

A senior EU source monitoring the situation said: "It looks like a relatively well orchestrated coup by a significant body of the military, not just a few colonels. They've got control of the airports and are expecting control over the TV station imminently. They control several strategic points in Istanbul".

"Given the scale of the operation, it is difficult to imagine they will stop short of prevailing. It's not just a few colonels," the source repeated.

One European diplomat was dining with the Turkish ambassador to a European capital when guests were interrupted by the pinging of urgent news on their mobile phones.

"This is clearly not some tinpot little coup. The Turkish ambassador was clearly shocked and is taking it very seriously," the diplomat told Reuters as the dinner party broke up. "However it looks in the morning, this will have massive implications for Turkey. This has not come out of nowhere."

In an statement sent by email and reported on TV channels, the military said it had taken power to protect the democratic order and to maintain human rights. All of Turkey's existing foreign relations would be maintained and the rule of law would remain the priority, it said.

The state-run Anadolu news agency said the chief of Turkey's military staff was among people taken "hostage" in the capital Ankara. CNN Turk also reported that hostages were being held at the military headquarters.

After serving as prime minister from 2003, Erdogan was elected president in 2014 with plans to alter the constitution to give the previously ceremonial presidency far greater executive powers.

His AK Party, with roots in Islamism, has long had a strained relationship with the military and nationalists in a state that was founded on secularist principles after World War One. The military has a history of mounting coups to defend secular principles, but has not seized power directly since 1980.

Yildirim said a group within Turkey's military had attempted to overthrow the government and security forces have been called in to "do what is necessary".

"Some people illegally undertook an illegal action outside of the chain of command," Yildirim said in comments broadcast by private channel NTV.

"The government elected by the people remains in charge. This government will only go when the people say so."

Those behind the attempted coup would pay the highest price, he added.

Turkey's state-run Anadolu agency claims that 17 police have been killed in a helicopter attack on police special forces headquarters in outskirts of Ankara.

وصف رجب طيب أردوغان، منذ قليل، الجيش التركى بـ"داعش"، داعيا المواطنين إلى النزول فى الشوارع ضد جيش بلاده.

الجيش التركى يسيطر على البلاد ويعلن حظر التجوال والأحكام العرفية.

قال بيان الجيش التركى، أن الإدارة السياسة توقفت فى حربها على الأكراد وهذه السياسة كلفت حياة الكثير من المدنيين والأبرياء والفساد والسرقة وصلت إلى مجال غير مسبوق، والديمقراطية أصيبت بالشلل. وتابع البيان: "نحن أمام مسئولية، ووظيفة الجيش حماية الديمقراطية التى أسسها أتاتورك تحت شعار السلام فى الداخل والخارج ومكلفون بحماية الأسس التى قامت عليها الجمهورية ووحدة الأراضى التركية ومنع محاولة السيطرة على القضاء والفساد والسرقة ومحاربة الإرهاب بكل أوجهه والتأكيد على حقوق الإنسان بغض النظر عن عرقهم ودينهم، وعلينا إعادة اعتبار تركيا التى خسرناها فى العالم والمنطقة وإقامة علاقات أفضل مع العالم، ولهذه الأسباب وضع الجيش يده على الحكومة".

كما ذكر الجيش التركى قائلاً: "سيتحرك الجيش من خلال مبدأ السلام والصلح والعلاقات ستبقى قائمة مع العالم وحلف الناتو والمحافظة على كل الاتفاقيات والمعاهدات، وتم إسقاط حكومة العدالة والتنمية وسيكون هناك من يدير البلاد وسيتم محاسبة الخارجين عن القانون، ومحاسبة قاسية لمن حاول تهديد الديمقراطية ونرجو من الشعب الانتباه، وتم وضع تدابير أمنية ولن يصاب أحد بضرر أو أى سوء ونحن مع حرية المواطنين".

كما أكد البيان، "حرية التعبير والسلام واللغة والدين والثقافة لن تكون مادة للتميز بين الشعب، وسيكون هناك دستور جديد يؤسس للسلام فى تركيا والخارج"، موجهين رسالة إلى الشعب قائلين: "وإلى كل المواطنين ابقوا فى سلام وأمان". 

الأمين العام للأمم المتحدة بان كى مون يدعو للهدوء فى تركيا

أفادت قناة سكاى نيوز فى خبر عاجل، منذ قليل، أن الأمين العام للأمم المتحدة بان كى مون، دعا إلى الهدوء فى تركيا، عقب إعلان الجيش التركى السيطرة على مقاليد الحكم.

قال رئيس الجمهورية التركى السابق عبد الله جول فى أول تصريح له بعد تحرك الجيش التركى، فى رسالته للشعب التركى: "اخرجوا لإنقاذ الديمقراطية فتركيا ليست دولة إفريقية أو فى أمريكا الجنوبية ولا يمكن تركها هكذا أو القبول بانقلاب عسكرى فيها، علينا الخروج".

وواصل: "هؤلاء أخطأوا فى حق الديمقراطية.. إنهم يحاولون قتل قائد الأركان وهذا الجيش الذى نعرفه لا يمكنه أن يقوم بالانقلاب.. علينا أن نعود للقانون والشرعية، الشعب يجب أن يقف صفا واحد ضد هذه التدخلات، وأى ضابط تصله أوامر بالانقلاب عليه أن يلقيها فى القمامه وسنتجاوز هذه الأزمة".

There are reports that soldiers have fired on people trying to cross Istanbul's Bosporus bridge in protest of the attempted coup, some have been hurt.

The Commander of Turkey's "First Army" division says those attempting the coup are a small faction and "nothing to worry about". 

A Kremlin spokesman has said that Vladimir Putin is being kept up-to-date about the situation in Turkey.

Turkish Interior Minister Efkan Ala has said units from the chief of general staff's office, the Turkish armed forces and the police are responding to the attempted coup in the country.

There are reports that two loud explosions have been heard in the Turkish capital, Ankara.

There are reports that tanks have been deployed outside the Turkish parliament.

State-run Anadolu agency says that Turkish military helicopters have opened fire at national intelligence agency headquarters in Ankara.

A senior Turkish official says that loyalist forces are gaining control over elements trying to overthrow the government.

That forces attempting coup have been unable to take over streets in many areas.

That insecurity will continue for the next 24 hours but will be contained.

وكان الجيش التركى أصدر بياناً أعلن فيه سيطرته على مقاليد الحكم فى البلاد، حفاظاً على الديمقراطية وحقوق الإنسان.

قصفت مروحيات تابعة للجيش التركى خلال قصفها لعناصر من المخابرات العسكرية بمدينة أنقرة.

وأكدت مصادر إعلامية أن مروحيات الجيش التركى التى تقود حركة الجيش فتحت نيران أسلحتها على مقر الاستخبارات العسكرية فى أنقرة، موضحة أن عناصر قوات الجيش سيطرت على مؤسسات الدولة التركية وأغلقت عددا من الشوارع الرئيسية.

قالت مصادر بوزارة الطيران، أنه تم إلغاء رحلة مصر لطيران المتجهة إلى مطار أتاتورك غدًا، بعد سيطرة الجيش التركى على البلاد مساء اليوم.

وأضافت المصادر انه كان من المقرر إقلاع رحلة الشركة فى تمام العاشرة صباحا، ولكن تم إلغاءها لحين إشعار آخر، موضحة أنه جارى الآن إبلاغ الركاب بالالغاء.

يشار إلى أن الجيش التركى، قال فى بيان له اليوم الجمعة، إنه سيطر على البلاد، مؤكداً أن جميع العلاقات الأجنبية سوف تستمر كما هى، وتابع: "سيادة القانون يجب أن تظل أولوية".

رئاسة روسيا: نأمل فى عودة تركيا للطريق الصحيح.. وبوتين سينظر فى لجوء أردوغان

عبر روسيا عن قلقها البالغ من الأحداث فى تركيا، حيث قال المتحدث باسم الرئاسة الروسية دميترى بيسكوف أن روسيا مهتمة بما يحدث في تركيا وتأمل أن تعود البلاد إلى طريق الاستقرار.

وأضاف أن القرار بشأن لجوء أردوغان فى روسيا يمكن فقط لبوتين التصديق عليه اذا أرسل الرئيس التركى طلب بهذا الأمر.

تداول نشطاء على موقع التواصل الاجتماعي "فيس بوك"، فيديو، لمواطنين أتراك يحاولون خرق حظر التجول الذي أعلنته قوات الجيش بعد الانقلاب على الرئيس التركي رجب طيب أردوغان، وتصدت لهم القوت بالذخيرة الحية.

وكان رئيس الوزراء التركي، تحدث عن محاولة عصيان عسكري خارج تسلسل القيادة وأنه سيتم التصدي لها، فيما أعلن الجيش في بيان له سيطرته على السلطة في البلاد للحفاظ على الديموقراطية وحقوق الإنسان واستغاث الرئيس التركي رجب طيب أردوغان بالعالم لمساندة الشرعية والشعب.

أعلن الجيش التركي، ليل السبت، فرض حظر التجول والأحكام العرفية في كافة أنحاء البلاد، وإغلاق جميع مطارات تركيا، وذلك عقب توليه السلطة في البلاد.

وقال الجيش التركي إنه "تم الاستيلاء على السلطة في البلاد بالكامل من أجل الحفاظ على الديمقراطية وحقوق الإنسان، وأن سيادة القانون هي العليا"، وفقًا لـ"سكاي نيوز".

وأشار في بيان بثه التلفزيون الرسمي إن حكومة الحالية أَضرب بحكم القانون والنظام الديمقراطي والعلماني.

وأوضح البيان أن مجلس السلام سيدير الدولة ويضمن سلامة الشعب، لافتا إلى أنه سيتم إعداد دستور جديد للبلاد في أقرب وقت.

كما أعلن الجيش إسقاط حكومة حزب العدالة والتنمية.

وفي الأثناء سيطر الجيش التركي على كافة المرافق الحيوية في إسطنبول.

ونقلت رويترز عن شهود عيان إن الدبابات تحاصر مبنى البرلمان التركي في أنقرة، مشيرة إلى أن مروحية عسكرية تطلق النار ودوي انفجار في العاصمة.

وانقطع بث التلفزيون التركي الرسمي بعد سيطرة الجيش على مقره وإذاعة البيان الأول للانقلاب.

وأظهر مقطع فيديو عشرات الأتراك الذين نزلوا إلى الشوارع، متجاهلين حظر التجوال. وأعرب عدد منهم عن رفضهم للانقلاب الذي تشهده البلاد.

Turkish army group announces takeover on TV

An army group in Turkey says it has taken over the country, with soldiers at strategic points in Istanbul and jets flying low in the capital, Ankara.

A statement read on TV said a "peace council" now ran the country and there was a curfew and martial law.

It is unclear who the group is or its level of support. Some top army officials are said to be detained.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he would overcome what he called an uprising by a minority.

People across Turkey are very confused and surprised, the BBC's Katy Watson in Istanbul says.

الأناضول: المخطط لتحركات الجيش التركى هو المستشار القانونى لرئيس الأركان

قالت مصادر عسكرية تركية لوكالة الاناضول أن المخطط للانقلاب فى تركيا هو المستشار القانونى لرئيس الأركان التركية العقيد "محرم كوسا" الذى أقيل من منصبه قبل قليل.

أكدت مصادر إعلامية تركيا وقوع انفجارات ضخمة فى قلب العاصمة التركية أنقرة، موضحة أن مبنى البرلمان التركى تم قصفه بقذيفة صاروخية.

Mr Erdogan told CNN Turk by mobile phone the action was by a "parallel structure" that would bring the necessary response. He has used this term in the past to refer to Fethullah Gulen, a US-based Muslim cleric he accuses of fomenting unrest.

Mr Erdogan called on people to take to the streets to oppose the uprising.

He said: "I urge the Turkish people to convene at public squares and airports. I never believed in a power higher than the power of the people."

Mr Erdogan said he was on his way to Ankara and those involved in the action would pay a heavy price. His office said he was in a secure location.

Reports earlier on Friday said the president was on holiday in the south-western resort of Marmaris.

Defying the announced curfew, a number of Erdogan supporters later turned out on Istanbul's central Taksim Square as reports of the attempted coup emerged.

There have since been reports of clashes there, with some on Twitter saying that gunfire has been heard near the square.

و من جانبه أكد البنتاغون، أنه لا تأثير للأحداث في تركيا على الوضع في قاعدة أنجيرليك.

PM Binali Yildirim had earlier denounced an "illegal action" by a military "group", stressing it was not a coup. He said that the government remained in charge.

The military group's statement on national broadcaster TRT, read by an announcer, said that democratic and secular rule of law had been eroded by the current government. There would be new constitution, it said.

A Turkish presidential source told Reuters news agency that the statement was not authorised by the army's command.

There are reports Turkey's top general, General Hulusi Akar, is among those taken hostage at the military HQ.

Mr Yildirim told NTV by telephone: "There was an illegal act by a group within the military that was acting out of the chain of military command. Our people should know that we will not allow any activity that would harm democracy."

Traffic has been stopped from crossing both the Bosphorus and Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridges in Istanbul.

There are reports of gunshots and at least one loud explosion in the capital Ankara. Other reports said soldiers were inside buildings of the Turkish state broadcaster in Ankara.

Gunfire was also heard outside Istanbul police HQ and tanks are said to be stationed outside Istanbul airport. All flights are cancelled, reports say.

One European Union source told Reuters that the military action "looks like a relatively well-orchestrated coup by a substantial body of the military, not just a few colonels".

Visiting Moscow, US Secretary of State John Kerry said he hoped for peace and "continuity" in Turkey.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said he was "very concerned" by events.

أكد مسئول تركى، أن طائرة الرئيس التركى رجب طيب أردوغان هبطت فى مطار إسطنبول، وذلك حسبما أفادت فضائية "سكاى نيوز العربية" فى خبر عاجل، منذ قليل.

وكان الجيش التركى قد أصدر بيان أمس الجمعة أكد خلاله سيطرته على الأمور وتوليه إدارة شئون البلاد، وعزل حكومة العدالة والتنمية.

Turkish official: coup has been 'repelled'

A Turkish national intelligence spokesman has claimed that the coup has been “repelled”, amid a concerted effort by both the government and military to portray the sense that their respective side is in power.

According to the Associated Press, government officials, including president Recep Erdoğan, have tried to play down reports that the military is in control.

At the same time, general Zekai Aksakalli, the commander of Turkey’s military special forces said that “those who are attempting a coup will not succeed”. He told NTV television:

Presidential sources say: “This is an attack against Turkish democracy. A group within the armed forces has made an attempt to overthrow the democratically elected government outside the chain of command".

“The statement made on behalf of the Armed Forces wasn’t authorised by the military command. We urge the world to stand in solidarity with the Turkish people.”
