Imagine if the Internet exploded in Manhattan and you'll have a good idea of how the west side of the city looks now that New York Comic Con has started.

Pop culture aficionados began lining up outside the Jacob Javits Center early Thursday morning to attend screenings and sit in on panels featuring actors, screenwriters and other pop culture fixtures.

They also came to show off elaborate costumes, some of them impressively handmade, in front of other comic book fans. 

Missing link: This young woman chose to come as the protagonist of the Legend of Zelda games   It's-a me! This fan took on the guise of Bowser, the villain from the Super Mario series

Wowsers! These ladies show off their Nintendo fandom, with the woman to the left putting in a strong performance as Link from the Legend of Zelda series, and the right-hand cosplayer going dressed as Bowser, esrtwhile opponent of Super Mario

The convention continues over the weekend, with hyped events such as Bill Nye signing autographs for fans and a panel featuring creators and actors from AMC's Walking Dead.

Fans can also shop for collectibles. 

Digg compiled the most valuable items for sale, including the highest-valued comic, the first Action Comics issue held by Bryan Menegus, valued over $3million.
