While it’s true many so-called ghost photos on the internet are fakes created by accidental double exposure, lens flares, or pareidolia (seeing faces in objects). Every so often, you can come across a picture that can’t be so easily explained away.

The Screaming Ghost
In 1984, a teenager was a victim of a fatal car accident. This photograph was taken shortly after the incident by local police. As a matter of procedure, one of the police officers took photos of the accident with a 35mm film camera for the record.
When the pictures were developed, the police were both puzzled and shocked by what they saw in one of the frames. Clearly visible above the open driver’s side door is what appears to be the head and shoulders of a young man. The face of the young man is contorted in an open-mouthed scream. Is it the spirit of the young man re-experiencing the last moments of his life?
The Woman of Alcatraz
Alcatraz, the former prison site, long considered to be one of the most haunted places in the US, was once home to hundreds of notorious murderers, bank robbers, and gangsters such as Al Capone. In this creepy image, a shadowy girl can be seen staring directly through the window at the camera from inside the inmates’ visitation waiting room.
The photographer, Sheila Sillery-Walsh said ‘When I glanced at the photo on my mobile, I saw this dark female figure in the picture. I looked at the window again and there was no-one in the room.”
Angelic Figure Caught on Wildlife Camera
Coast To Coast AM guest Dingo, a law enforcement officer from Georgia, posted this eerie image under the headline “Strange Figure on Wildlife Camera”. According to Dingo, he and another officer responded to a call about hunters trespassing on private property. The officers were unable to locate the suspects. The next day the property owners set up a infrared wildlife camera in an attempt to catch the trespassers. They seem to have captured something else instead.
“After a number of reports from the complainant and unable to locate any hunters in the area, the property owner put a wildlife camera up. The property owner checked the camera the next day and contacted us to take a look at the pictures. The property owner wouldn’t tell me what he thought it was and I wouldn’t express my opinion of what I thought it was, for fear that we didn’t want the other to think each other was crazy.” Dingo said about the incident.
The Hidden Cowboy
In 1996, Ike Clanton, dressed in cowboy attire had his friend photograph him while he stood in Boothill Graveyard in the famous Tombstone, Arizona. After reviewing the photograph, Clanton noticed a man in the background of the photo that was not there when the photograph was taken.
Intrigued he set out to recreate the photo with a friend standing in the background and discovered it was impossible to recreate the picture without having the legs visible. This photograph remains a mystery to this day.
The Ghost of Guildford
This photo appeared in England’s Surrey Advertiser in March 2012. Taken at The Mount in Guildford, the eerie picture shows a white figure standing in the center. Amateur photographer, Mark Baker, 37, who took the photograph, claims there was no-one around and insists that the picture has not been altered in any way.
Fireman Captures Ghost in Burning Hosue
Firefighter Douglas Tipold was called to a house fire in Gary, Indiana. As Tipold was waiting for his partners to unravel a hose he snapped a few shots of the burning house with the camera on his cell phone to document the scene. Later that night Tipold’s wife Donna noticed a strange shadowy figure engulfed in flames in one of the windows of the home.
The Virgin Mary
A family in Kirtland, Ohio were shocked after they noticed a strange figure in a photograph with their daughter. At the time of the photograph, Erin was battling leukemia. In the photo, Erin is pictured running through the yard with sparklers. Next to her is a red figure that the Potter family believe is the Virgin Mary.
“I know she’s not alone, I know we are not alone and people who don’t want to believe it, that’s okay. Whatever happened, you know something powerful and special was there with us. I definitely have my moments when I’m falling apart and I’m terrified and I literally grab my phone and I stare at that picture.” Erin’s father Kevin Potter said to Cleveland’s 19 Action News.
Erin Potter is currently free of cancer and her family believes that they witnessed a miracle.
The Most Haunted Nightclub in The World
Bobby Mackey’s Music World in Wilder, KY, a.k.a. “the most haunted nightclub in the U.S.A.” Club DJ and tour guide, Wanda Kay, believes the photo shows a ghost climbing a now-barricaded staircase.
Ghost in The Old Truck
This eerie photograph was taken by a police officer who snapped a photo of the abandoned truck before it was towed away. However, there appears to be an apparition inside. Is it a spirit or an optical illusion?
The Waverly Hills Sanatorium Spectre
It’s believed as many as 64,000 people who were admitted to Waverly Hills Sanatorium died there over the years leading to accusations of the staff’s overuse use of the “body chute”, or “the death tunnel”. The chute connected to an underground room where patient’s bodies were kept before being taken away for cremation. Most of the abandoned hospital, including the morgue and body chute, remains intact to this day which was where this now famous photograph was captured.
Taken by professional photographer and Missouri Paranormal Research Investigator Tom Halstead, during an overnight investigation at the notoriously haunted Sanatorium. There has been some question as to whether this photo had been doctored. Halstead passed away in February 2013, but shortly before his death he was asked about this photograph. His reply “I have nothing to prove to anyone.”
Time Lapse Ghost
On July 23 2013 photographer Nathan Ziegler set up the time-lapse camera in the Old Pioneer Cemetery in Milton-Freewater, Oregon to film the sunset. The camera was set to take a still photo at 30 second intervals. After reviewing the footage, Ziegler noticed a strange figure in one of the frames.
The figure appeared in one frame at 9:08:30 but isn’t in either frame 30 seconds before or after that frame.
Hampton Court Palace Ghost
Is this the ghost of Henry VIII’s wife caught on camera? Coach driver Trevor Tye, had driven a coach-load of tourists to the royal palace but ventured in to get pictures himself while he was waiting. It was only after returning home after taking pictures of the marble staircase in the Palace’s public entrance, that he spotted what appears to be the figure of a young woman kneeling. Tye sent the picture to the palace, who informed him a security guard had spotted the ghost of a young woman or girl in the same spot on more than one occasion.

Henry Yau, from Houston, said he was inspired to visit The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado after hearing stories of its paranormal past. After uploading pictures to his Instagram account, he noticed this ghostly figure standing at the top of the century old stairwell in the hotel.
The Nurse of Leeds Hospital
Andrew Milburn was texting his girlfriend at the Leeds General Infirmary, United Kingdom, when he noticed a ghostly figure of a nurse in a Snapchat he took. There are numerous ghost stories connected to the hospital, many of which concern a nurse who haunts the wards, caring for her patients long after her passing.
The Window In The Abandoned Hospital
Adam Smith had the fright of his life when he took a photograph of the abandoned Brecon and Radnor Lunatic Asylum in Brecon, Wales. Smith, who was walking past, spotted what appeared to be a shadowy figure looking from the first-floor window of the former psychiatric hospital – despite it being closed for more than 15 years.

“A friend of mine was taking a picture of herself and her daughter kissing and in the background you can clearly see a figure that was not there. She had “ghost experts” come in and check around the house and found nothing. After some research they found one of the previous owners was a mortician or ran a funeral home or something. I have known this girl for years and it would completely shock me if this was fabricated as I saw how upset she was and how much money she dished out for experts. They no longer live there.”

The Fisherwoman of Newark Castle
During a visit to Newark castle in St Monans in Fife, Scotland, paranormal enthusiast Lenny Low captured a ghostly figure in one of his photographs. After delving into the history of the local landmark, Low believes the spectral figure to that of a fisherwoman who most likely worked and lived in the castle which dates back to the 13th century.
The Motorcycle Accident
In 2016 Saul Vazquez was driving home when he came across the scene of a fatal motorcycle accident in Stanton, KY. As the emergency services worked the scene Vazquez snapped this picture which appears to show a white wispy figure hovering between the two ambulances, leading many to believe it is the spirit of the motorcyclist.
Three’s a Crowd
Enjoying a night out on the town in Newcastle, United Kingdom, Victoria and Kayley decided to take a selfie as they enjoyed their drinks. What they didn’t realise was that they had been photobombed by an eerie figure wearing Victorian clothing. Both women stated that it couldn’t possibly be another person at the bar because the bar had been empty.
The Midnight Tourist
Taken by a group of party-goers on New Year’s Eve 2013, this haunting photograph clearly shows the lonely spectral figure of a man staring out across the river Thames outside of the British Parliament.
The Spectre of Mary King’s Close
Mary King’s Close in Edinburgh, Scotland is a warren of underground streets and spaces and has long enjoyed a reputation for being haunted. This photo from The Real Mary King’s Close, a company offering tours of the underground museum, reportedly shows a ghost enjoying an after-hours tour.
The Post Master of St. Bathans
This eerie photograph snapped by a tourist visiting the old post office in St. Bathans, New Zealand, appears to show a ghostly figure peering out of the upstairs window. Is this merely the reflection of passing clouds in the sky or does it show a former employee, trapped forever within the historic building?
The Sleeping Guest
This photo taken at Georgia’s Historic Worley B&B Inn shows what appears to be a man resting on a bed. However, he wasn’t there when the photograph was taken. According to L.E.M.U.R. Paranormal Investigations, the ghost might belong to a young man who died in that very room in the late 1800s.
The Roadside Angel
It’s said that this white figure was spotted at the scene of a horrific car accident, where — defying all medical explanation — the young driver walked away unscathed. The Glowing Entity
It’s been named as one of the best ghost photographs ever taken and was snapped by Tom Halstead during a paranormal investigation in an old abandoned house in Missouri, US. Halstead reported that as he stood in a bedroom on the first floor, he looked around and saw a huge glowing entity moving up the staircase towards him. As the apparition reached the top of the stairs, it started to fade and disappear. This was when Halstead managed to capture the ghost on film.
The Occupied Seat
The above photo was taken by Chuck Perry, stage manager of the Hibbing High School theatre in Minnesota. Many believe that the hat wearing apparition is the school’s first stage manager, Bill Ratican. While legends vary greatly, the general story goes that seat J-47 is haunted. On performance night people claim that the seat is often found in the down position, as if someone is sitting there.
