Her remains were mummified over 2,000 years ago, but a 3D scanning system has shed new light on the life of a five year old girl from Egypt.

Scientists have used 3D scanning to create an exact digital copy of the mummy, revealing how it looks on the outside and inside.

The scans revealed that the mummified remains belonged to a girl aged between 4.5 and six, who likely died from dysentery or meningitis.

وأفادت الباحثون أن جسد المومياء ملفوفة في الكتان ومغطاة بأقراط مستديرة، وقلادة رومانية مما يشير إلى أنها جاءت من عائلة ثرية.

EGYPT'S 'LITTLE ONE'

The mummified Egyptian child has been called Sherit, which is ancient Egyptian for 'little one.'

The mummy has been stored at the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum in San Jose since 1930, although little is known about where it came from. 

In 2005, Sherit underwent CT scanning, allowing the researchers to determine her age and state of health.

The scans suggest that the girl was between four and a half and six years old when she died from either dysentery or meningitis.

After her death, her body was wrapped in linen and covered with round earrings, an amulet and a Roman necklace – suggested she came from a wealthy family.

Researchers from Artec 3D combined 3D scanning and computed tomography to scan the mummified Egyptian child, called Sherit – ancient Egyptian for 'little one.'

Julie Scott, Executive Director of the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum in San Jose, where the mummy is displayed, said: 'For us, the value of this project is to bring this little girl's story to life.

'She came to our museum in the 1930s, yet we knew very little about her.

'We wanted to find a way to learn more about who she was without damaging her mummy wrappings.'
