P. P. S.: For a long time, many historians have wondered how an empire as powerful as that of ancient Egypt could have traded without currency.

Indeed, the first known Egyptian currencies have long been imitations of Athenian tetradrachms and gold staters of Pharaoh Nektanebo II (361-343 BC).

before the conquest of Alexander the Great. But a text, after two and a half centuries to the reign of Tut ânkhamun, tells us the misadventures of a certain Ounamon, responsible for the purchase of wood for the processional boat of Amon-Re of Thebes.

A man from his crew reportedly ran away with a gold vase of five deben, four silver jugs of twenty deben weight, and a small bag of eleven deben.

The little bag of money was definitely filled with little bullies. The existence of such ingots was confirmed by T ôd's treasure which contained twelve silver ingots, currently housed in the Louvre and the Museum of Cairo.

This ingot is distinguished by the presence of a detailed inscription: ′′ Tutankh âmon regent of the Heliopolis of Upper Egypt ′′ (i.e. Thebes).

The king's name is not surrounded by the usual royal cartridge (an oval underlined by a trait, symbolizing the universality of pharaonic royalty).

It is inserted in a cartridge shaped like a broc or jug.

This one itself has a hieroglyphic meaning: ′′ hnm ", which is found in the expression ′′ hnm m hd ", meaning ′′ inlaid in money ".

On the other hand, the very shape of the object is not Without reminding the shape of the hieroglyph meaning precisely ′′ ingot ".

This form was therefore obviously familiar to the ancient Egyptians.

The extreme rarity of existing copies today is due in particular to the fact that Egypt owned no money mine.

This one came from exchanges with cities in the Middle East, such as Ougarit, Byblos or Beirut.

So you can think that such items were reserved for special or ceremonial purposes.

This rare ingot is thus the world's first dated monetary object.
