 في ربيع عام 1974، وبين أطلال حريق شبّ في غابة خاصة بجزيرة فورت جورج في ولاية فلوريدا، عثرت عائلة أمريكية تُدعى بيتز Betz على جسم معدني كروي لامع. ما بدا في البداية وكأنه قطعة خردة أو عمل فني، سرعان ما تحول إلى لغز حير العلماء وأشعل الصحف، وبقي دون تفسير نهائي لعقود.

قصة الاكتشاف: كرة تتحرك… وتصدر أصواتاً !

كانت الكرة بحجم كرة البولينغ تقريباً ، قطرها 20 سم، ووزنها نحو 10 كجم، مصنوعة من الفولاذ المقاوم للصدأ، ناعمة الملمس ولامعة السطح، دون أي شقوق أو علامات.

في البداية، اعتقدوا أنها كانت قذيفة مدفع يعود إلى عهد المستعمرين الإسبان من عصر النهضة، لكن الكرة كانت نظيفة ومصقولة ولامعة، بينما كانت الأسلحة في ذلك الوقت غالبًا ما تكون مصنوعة من الحديد أو الحجر، وليس من الفولاذ المقاوم للصدأ أو مطلية بالفضة.

لكن الغرابة لم تبدأ إلا حين أُحضرت الكرة إلى منزل العائلة:

- بدأت تتحرك من تلقاء نفسها على الأرض.

- كانت تغير اتجاهها فجأة دون أن تصطدم بشيء.

- أصدرت أصوات طنين غريبة متزامنة مع العزف على الغيتار.

- بدا وكأن لها نوعاً من الوعي، ما جعل العائلة تصفها بأنها "حية".

اكتشف تيري، ابن أنطوان وجيري بيتز، أن الكرة كانت تستجيب لصوت الغيتار وأصدرت صوتًا خافتًا أخاف الكلب.

ثم أصبحت الأمور أكثر غرابة عندما جلسوا على الأرض ودحرجوا الكرة تجاه بعضهم، وعند دحرجتها، تغير اتجاهها في منتصف الطريق وعادت إلى الشخص الذي دحرجتها.

- الأغرب أن كلب العائلة كان يصرخ ويغطي أذنيه عندما تقترب الكرة، مما زاد الأمر غموضاً.

وقال جيري بيتز في مقابلة مع الصحيفة: "عندما اقترب كلب العائلة من الكرة، بدأ بالأنين وغطى أذنيه بمخالبه، وهو أمر لم أره من قبل"، فيما تشتبه عائلة بيتز أيضًا في أن الإشعاع الشمسي يؤثر على الكرة، مما يجعلها تتحرك بقوة عندما تشرق الشمس.

ويبلغ قطر الكرة حوالي 20 سنتيمترا، وتزن نحو 10 كيلوغرامات، وقال جيري بيتز، إنه عندما قام خبير من شركة أبحاث في باتون روج بولاية لويزيانا بفحص الكرة، "اكتشف موجات راديو قادمة منها ومجالًا مغناطيسيًا يحيط بها".

وتدفع التفاصيل الغريبة حول الكرة الكثير من الناس للتكهن بأنها من أصل فضائي.

زخم إعلامي وتحقيقات علمية: هل هي من الفضاء ؟

مع تصاعد القصص، اجتاحت وسائل الإعلام المحلية والعالمية أخبار الكرة، وأصبحت موضع جدل بين علماء، صحفيين، ومهووسين بالظواهر الخارقة.

فحوصات البحرية الأمريكية

فحصت الكرة في قاعدة مايبورت البحرية وتبين أنها مصنوعة من فولاذ 431 المعروف في الصناعات الأرضية وأظهرت تجاويف داخلية غامضة عند تصويرها بالأشعة السينية ، ولم تُكتشف أي إشعاعات، أجهزة إلكترونية، أو تقنيات غير مألوفة.

اختبارات أخرى

علماء من جامعة لويزيانا ومنظمة أبحاث الظواهر الغامضة (APRO) فحصوها أيضاً ، البعض زعم وجود موجات راديوية وحقل مغناطيسي صادر عنها ، فحصها أيضاً بنفسه العالم الشهير ج. آلن هاينك الخبير في ظواهر الأطباق الطائرة (الأجسام الطائرة المجهولة UFOs )  ولم يجد فيها شيئاً غير عادي.

التفسيرات المحتملة: بين العلم والخيال

توالت الفرضيات، وتراوحت بين المنطق العلمي والاعتقادات الخارقة. إليك أبرزها:

- كرة صمام صناعي: مطابقة من حيث الوزن والمعدن لما يُستخدم في مصانع الورق أو الغلايات. 

- قطعة من عمل فني فُقد : نحات ادعى فقدان كرات مشابهة في المنطقة عام 1971.

- جهاز تجسس أو سلاح : مزاعم بوجود مواد نووية بداخلها ، لكن لا دليل على ذلك.

- جسم من أصل فضائي : حركات غريبة، طنين، تجاويف… هل هي مسبار ذكي ؟ لكنها فرضية مستبعدة علمياً. 

- مجرد وهم بصري: مركز ثقل منحرف، وأرضية مائلة تخلق خداعاً بالحركة، وهو سبب مثبت ومنطقي.

التفسير الأقرب للعلماء هو أنها كرة صناعية تائهة، إما من مصنع أو مشروع فني، وكل الظواهر يمكن تفسيرها بمزيج من الفيزياء والتهويل الإعلامي.

وأين الكرة الآن ؟ هل اختفت ؟

بعد عام 1975، قررت عائلة بيتز الانسحاب من الأضواء بعد أن أصبحت حياتها مرهقة بسبب اهتمام الإعلام والغرباء ، أعيدت الكرة إلى العائلة بعد الفحوصات ، ولا توجد معلومات رسمية عن عرضها أو بيعها.

ويُعتقد أنها ما تزال في حوزة العائلة أو أحد الورثة ، ولم تُعرض علناً منذ عقود ، حاولت برامج بودكاست مثل Odd Ball تتبع مصيرها، دون جدوى مما جعل البعض يتساءل: هل ما زال هناك سرّ ما يُخفى ؟

هل ما زالت غامضة ؟

العلم قدّم تفسيرات منطقية، لكن غموض القصة لم يُمحَ تماماً، ربما لأن الكرة لم تُشرح بالكامل أمام العلن واختفاؤها أضفى مسحة من "السر" ـ ولأن توقيت القصة كان في عصر هيمنة ثقافة يوفو UFO مما ساهم في تعظيمها ، إن كانت الكرة "فولاذاً صناعي" فقط، فلماذا ما زلنا نذكرها حتى اليوم ؟

بين العلم والأسطورة

قد تكون كرة بيتز مجرد قطعة صمّام قديم ضلّ طريقه... أو قد تكون أكثر من ذلك ، لكن ما يجعلها خالدة في الذاكرة ليس مكوناتها، بل الأسئلة التي فتحتها، والانبهار الإنساني أمام كل ما لا نعرفه بعد ، فحتى وإن حُلّ اللغز تقنياً، يبقى غموض القصة عالقاً في وعينا الجماعي... كأثرٍ من حكاية لم تكتمل فصولها بعد.

The Betz mystery sphere is a metal sphere with an approximate diameter of 8 inches (20 cm) weighing nearly 22 pounds (10 kg) uncovered in 1974 by a family in Florida.

Background

On March 27, 1974, the Betz family investigated a small brush fire near their residence in Fort George Island, Florida. The family of three, Antoine, Jerri, and son Terry, came across a small metal sphere the size of a bowling ball.

Their first thought was the sphere had been a cannonball left from New World conquistadors.

They decided to take the sphere back to their house.

Several days later, Terry was playing the guitar in their home.

The sphere seemed to react to the sound of the guitar.

It made a throbbing noise.

Later, the sphere was noticed to roll on its own and even stop on its own and change direction.

Terry started doing experiments with the sphere.

He noticed the sphere would reverberate when hit with a hammer.

He also found the sphere would move after being shaken and placed on the ground.

The Betzes reported that the sphere moved on its own several times, and that it would follow people around the house seemingly on its own.

Eventually, they stored the sphere in a trunk, and only took it out to show friends and family.

At the time of discovery

In April 1974, United Press International (UPI) reported "The [United States] Navy said the sphere is nothing more than a huge ball bearing used as a check valve in the piping system of some chemical plant."

The same month, the Miami Herald reported that a similar ball in Jacksonville (near Fort George Island) had been identified as "part of a valve once used in a paper mill."

In June 1974, UPI further reported that the sphere had been examined by a group of scientists attending a conference sponsored by the National Enquirer—the group felt "the object was constructed of some type of stainless steel made on earth."

At the time, the National Enquirer was offering a cash reward for any object proven to have come from outer space.

Later review

A 2012 analysis by Skeptoid revealed contemporary media analysis indicating that the Betz sphere may have been a ball check valve produced by the Bell & Howell company: its size, weight, and metallurgical composition matched those of the company's ball check valve.

Skeptoid also posited an explanation for the sphere's autonomous motion, noting that the sphere "sat quietly on display inside the Betz home for nearly two weeks, and is not reported to have ever moved on its own at all, except for when someone took it down to experiment with it", and quoting a representative of the U.S. Navy who stated that "I believe it's because of the construction of the house...

It's old and has uneven stone floors.

The ball is almost perfectly balanced, and it takes just a little indentation to make it move or change direction."

Skeptoid noted coverage of New Mexico artist James Durling-Jones, who had been collecting scrap metal for use in sculptures; Durling-Jones reported having loaded ball check valves into the rooftop luggage rack of his Volkswagen Bus, and having "(driven) through the Jacksonville area around Easter of 1971, at which time a few of the balls rolled off the luggage rack and were lost."

Skeptoid concluded that this was the sphere's origin.

Where is the ball now? Has it disappeared?

After 1975, the Betz family decided to withdraw from the spotlight after their lives became exhausting due to the media and outsiders' attention. The ball was returned to the family after examination, and there is no official information about its display or sale.

It is believed to still be in the possession of the family or an heir, and it has not been publicly displayed for decades. Podcasts like Odd Ball have tried to trace its fate, to no avail, leading some to wonder: Is there still a secret hidden?

Is it still a mystery?

Science has offered logical explanations, but the mystery of the story has not been completely resolved. This may be because the ball was never fully explained publicly, and its disappearance added a touch of "secret"—and because the timing of the story occurred during the era of UFO culture, which contributed to its glorification. But what makes it memorable is not its components, but the questions it raised, and the human fascination with all that we still don't know.
