When you first lay eyes on these colorful stones, you think the’re some kind of special gemstone that could possibly destroy your bank account in seconds, but you’ed be wrong. Their origin will surprise the heck out of you, no its not some alien stone.. These stones, called Fordite or Detroit Agate, are actually paint deposits from old car painting racks, you never would have guess that, would you!

Before car factories became automated, things were done by hand on a long production line, this includes the painting process. On the production line the chassis of the cars were painted by hand, the wet paint would drip off the vehicles chassis and dry over time. The process was repeated hundreds or thousands of times, of course this left large deposits of paint which grew to a few several inches thick in some places.

A smart worker recognized the potential of the paint deposits, he chipped them off the racks and kept them, later they were to be turned into jewelry. Once the stones of paint are ground down and polished, they reveal an awesome array of colors that seem almost alien like.

Jewelers are moderately successful at recreating the process to create their own Fordite, however, the original stones that have history, are the most valuable ones.
