وكانت جمعية خيرية بريطانية قد علمت عن معاناة راجو في ولاية اوتار براديش في الهند، فقامت بمساعدة 10 أطباء بيطريين، و 20 من حرس الغابات، بالإضافة إلى ستة رجال شرطة، بعملية جريئة لإنقاذه في منتصف الليل.

وقالت " بوجا بينيبال"، المتحدثة باسم الجمعية الخيرية في المملكة المتحدة، أن الفريق ذهل لرؤية الدموع تنهمر على وجه الفيل "راجو"، أثناء عملية الإنقاذ، وأضافت: "الفيلة حيوانات ذكية للغاية، وتعبر عن مشاعرها، لذلك فهذه الدموع تعطينا تصورا عن ما تعرض له هذا الحيوان خلال نصف قرن".

وأعلنت الجمعية، أنهم اختاروا منتصف الليل، لتحرير الفيل، لأنه الوقت الأنسب لحمايته من حرارة الشمس الحارقة.
