10 Wonderful Unique Beaches

10 wonderfully unique beaches

The Baths, Virgin Gorda, Caribbean
Gigantic boulders and tranquil pools

Devil's Bay

The Baths

The Baths are amazing! Huge boulders at the shoreline arranged just so. God was having an amazing day when he created this place! Be prepared to walk through water, climb stairs, scramble over boulders, etc. Barefoot in bikini's and boardshorts works!

Camilo Beach, Lagos, Portugal
Picturesque cliffs surround the orange sand

Praia Do Camilo, Lagos, Portugal.

Camilo Beach: Lagos

Sure, this beach is small, but the scenery is absolutely amazing! Great rock formations and warm turquoise water. There's a giant natural Pot Hole carved in the rock that you can walk into from the sea side, and there's also a small tunnel through the rock that leads to a another adjoining beach.

Pfeiffer Big State Beach, CA, United States
Colorful purple sand throughout the beach

We loved the wildness of the beach. Great photo opportunities and fantastic beach. The beach has large areas of purple sand due to the garnet content. It is a short walk to the beach car park and there is an entrance fee of $5 per vehicle. The road down to the beach is long narrow and winding but the trip down is worth it.

Maho Beach, St Maarten, Caribbean
Airplanes fly right above the beach

Maho Beach

Maho Beach: maho bay

Maho Beach: Fast nicht zu glauben.

Maho Beach: Und Landung...hinter dem Zaun

Maho Beach: Interessiert eigentlich niemanden..

Maho Beach: "City " Hopper...

Maho Beach: Zum Berühren nahe

Maho Beach: Landeanflug der TUI Fly

Maho Beach: Da ist Können gefragt.

A fun beach, somewhat crowded at the end of the airport runway. If you are an airplane watcher, this is a place for you. The beach is under the approach runway to the airport and planes from small props to 747's fly 50 feet overhead. One stands and sees them approach overhead and many stand by the fence 150 feet behind the thrust of the planes taking off. The beach itself is nice, a little steep to the water's edge, but nice sand and water. Chairs and umbrellas to rent. There is a beach bar and restaurant with bathroom facilities on site. A fun 1/2 day or day trip.

Glass Beach, CA, United States
Smooth glass stones cover the beach

Glass Beach-touch the ocean

Glass Beach, Ft. Bragg

Glass Beach: Glass

Words and pictures can not even explain how beautiful this beach was. For those that said there was hardly any glass on the beach sadly, must have gone to the wrong beach. It was a challange getting down the rocky cliff to it but well worth it. We dug down in places to see how deep the glass was and its probably 3 feet deep! There is very little rock or sand and the glass is smooth and multicolored.

Los Dedos Playa Brava, Punta del Este, Uruguay
A massive hand sculpture emerges from the sand

Los Dedos Playa Brava: hermosa arena

Los Dedos Playa Brava: Los dedos

Los Dedos Playa Brava: Vista desde lejos

A pretty interesting place to take pictures as the fingers are a bit intriguing and alluring. However, lots of tourists and the beach didn't look too good to swim in. Worth a stop to take pics and ponder at the mystery of the artwork.

Jokulsarlon Lagoon, Iceland

Jokulsarlon Lagoon: Black sand beach 2

We are a family of 4 - chn aged 7 and 8 and we have recently returned form our trip to Iceland. It was an amazing holiday destination and Jokulsarlon Lagoon was definitely one of our highlights. We drove from Vik and it took us about 2 and a half hours with a few photo stops along the way.

The sight of the lagoon as you approach is breath taking. We spent about 45 mins on the car park side of the lagoon. You have been warned hats, coats and gloves were a must in late March. The shop was open and served very nice hot chocolate that kept us warm :) - loos also available :)

The boat trips hadn't started yet in an email reply I had got said they start at the beginning of April. We don't think we missed out. Yes perhaps the boat trip may have been a bonus but it was still definitely worth the trip.

We then moved the car to the other side of the bridge towards the beach and what met us there was an iceberg at the edge of the water that was the most amazing turquoise blue colour. I literally couldn't take my eyes off it. The children aptly named this the ice cube beach and that's exactly what it is. The contrast between the black sand and clear, clean ice is like nothing any of us had seen before. It was a wonderful experience to hear the kids shouting to each other - look this one is a submarine, this one is a dolphin and this one looks like a flower etc! Such beautiful shapes ignite innocent imaginations. We spent a good 45 mins down on the beach exploring, clambering over ice cubes, chatting, laughing and taking photos - it was GREAT!

As other reviewers had mentioned we then parked at one of the car parks as you approach the bridge and climbed over the moraine to view the lagoon from a different angle. It was worth the short walk and the kids spotted a few seals and enjoyed sliding down the banks in some snowy areas.

In short yes most definitely worth the trip - it will stay with you forever. A picnic/snack supply good for the journey, bring warm clothes, plenty of batteries and memory cards; visit the beach, climb the moraine for a different view, enjoy the hot chocolate and most of all appreciate the beauty of nature.

March was an ideal time to go as it wasn't very busy at all and we really felt we had the place to ourselves. Special days create memories that last forever - Jokulsarlon is one of ours - ENJOY

Playa de Gulpiyuri, Asturias, Spain
An inland beach with a cove and caves

Children's Pool, CA, United States
Harbour seals occupy the beach

It was supposed to be a children's pool, but the harbor seals took over and it's a main tourist and local attraction. Great picture spot.

Scala dei Turchi, Realmonte, Italy
Sandy beach lies beneath white rock formations

Visiting is a must if you’re in Agrigento. Natural erosion of the white sandstone has created steps on the cliff face, where one is able to walk and reach over to the next bay. The bay itself is a beautiful sight in itself, with clear water and an adjacent sandy beach. These are the co-ordinates which lead you to the sandy beach
