نجا كوكب الأرض في العام 2012 من أكبر عاصفة شمسية معروفة تقريبا في التاريخ. عاصفة كان بمقدورها تدمير الحضارة البشرية على الأرض وإعادة عقارب ساعتها ثلاثة قرون للوراء. وكشفت وكالة الفضاء الأمريكية عن سر هذه العاصفة بعد عامين على حدوثها.

نشرت وكالة الفضاء الأمريكية (ناسا) في 23 يوليو بيانا كشفت فيه عن نجاة الأرض والحضارة الإنسانية من الدمار في العام 2012 بعد مرور أكبر عاصفة شمسية بالقرب من الكرة الأرضية. وقالت ناسا إن هذه العاصفة كانت ستؤثر بدرجة لا تتصور على جميع الشبكات الكهربائية على الكوكب وإعادة الحضارة الإنسانية الحالية إلى الوراء ثلاثة قرون كاملة.

تنشأ العواصف الشمسية بداية على سطح النجم الشمسي من الانفجارات والمقذوفات الحممية تبعث ببلازما متأينة تسافر في الفضاء بسرعات عالية جدا. وينتج عنها رياح شمسية محملة بإشعاعات تسبب عواصف مغناطيسية جبارة عند دخولها في المجال المغناطيسي للأرض. وهذه العواصف المغناطيسية الجبارة لديها القدرة على إصابة جميع الشبكات الكهربائية الأرضية باضطرابات وقطع جميع وسائل الاتصالات المعتمدة على الكهرباء: الإنترنت وجميع شبكات الاتصال لا تنجو من هذا المصير.
