#Obama urges #Gulf nations to help with chaos in #Libya

President Barack Obama urged Gulf nations to help calm the chaotic political situation in Libya, saying that outside military action would not be enough to help reduce tensions in the war-ravaged North African country.

After a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi at the White House on Friday , Obama said a political solution was needed in the oil-rich Mediterranean state, where two rival governments are fighting for control.

"We're going to have to encourage some of the countries inside of the Gulf who have, I think, influence over the various factions inside of Libya to be more cooperative themselves," Obama told reporters.

"In some cases, you've seen them fan the flames of military conflict, rather than try to reduce them."

Obama is set to meet with leaders from Saudi Arabia and other members of the Gulf Cooperation Council in Washington on May 13 and 14 to discuss a host of crises in the Middle East.

Obama noted Islamic State militants, who have taken over large parts of Syria and Iraq, have also been active in Libya. The United States is leading a coalition fighting the group in Iraq and Syria.

"We are consistently looking where terrorist threats might emanate, and Libya, obviously, is an area of great concern," Obama said. He compared the situation to Somalia, where Washington has carried out drone strikes against suspected al Qaeda militants.

"We will not be able to solve the problem with just a few drone strikes or a few military operations," he said, adding that he and Renzi did not discuss the possible sale of U.S. drones to Italy, which some Italian media reports had expected.

The United States, Italy and their allies must combine counterterrorism efforts with a push for a political resolution, Obama said.

"The answer ultimately is to have a government that can control its own borders and work with us. That's going to take some time," he said.

Renzi agreed it was up to the Libyans themselves. "Peace in Libya: either the tribes do this, or no one is going to do this," he said.

Pakistan delegation heads to Saudi Arabia after Yemen request

Pakistan's government said Thursday it will dispatch a top civil-military delegation to Saudi Arabia following Riyadh's request that it join a coalition to defend Yemen's president, promising a "strong response" to any threat to the Gulf kingdom.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif decided to send the group to Saudi Arabia on Friday after meeting with top defence and military officials in Islamabad late Thursday, his office said in a statement.

"The meeting concluded that any threat to Saudi Arabia's territorial integrity would evoke a strong response from Pakistan," he said, adding that Pakistan's defence minister and Sharif's national security advisor would travel to the country, along with top military figures.

Sharif told the meeting that "Pakistan enjoys close and brotherly relations with Saudi Arabia and other GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) countries and attaches great importance to their security."

The Gulf kingdom has begun air strikes against Shia Houthi rebels and the Saudi ambassador in Washington said a coalition of 10 countries, including Pakistan, was being formed to protect the Yemeni government.

The rebels and their allies had been closing in on main southern city Aden, where President Abd-rabbo Mansour Hadi has been holed up since fleeing the rebel-controlled capital Sanaa last month.

Their advance raised Saudi fears that the Shia minority rebels would seize control of the whole of its Sunni-majority neighbour and take it into the orbit of Shia Iran.

Yemen is teetering on the brink of civil war as turmoil has grown since Houthis launched a power grab in February.

Islamabad has longstanding close ties to Saudi Arabia, and foreign office spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam said the kingdom had asked Pakistan to join the coalition.

"I can confirm we have been contacted by Saudi Arabia in this regard. The matter is being examined. That's all I have to say at the moment," she told a regular press briefing.

Aslam said no decision had been taken yet on whether to close the Pakistani embassy in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa.

The official Saudi Press Agency said earlier that Pakistan, along with Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Sudan, had all "expressed desire to participate in the operation".

Egypt and Jordan have confirmed they will join Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia in the coalition.

However, joining the coalition might irk Pakistan's minority Shia community and neighbour Iran.

Pakistan has suffered a rising tide of sectarian violence in recent years, most of it perpetrated by hardline Sunni Muslim groups against minority Shia Muslims, who make up around one in five of the population.

Foreign minister : #Qatar should support #Egypt's national security

Foreign minister calls on Qatar to respect agreements from November summit in Riyadh

Shoukry

Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry

Cairo's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry called on Qatar to adopt "supportive policies" for Egypt's national security, urging Doha to stay away from any acts that harm the country's stability.

Relations between the two countries have soured since the ouster of Muslim Brotherhood president Mohamed Morsi, as Egypt has accused the Gulf state of interfering in its affairs.

In an interview , Shoukry didn't directly blame Qatar's backing of the Brotherhood and its Islamist-oriented Al Jazeera satellite channel for the strained ties, instead saying that he will "leave the judgment to observers."

Shoukry pointed out that Egypt quickly reacted to Saudi Arabia's call for Egypt to back a recent agreement between leaders of three Gulf countries to end a months-long rift with Qatar in "appreciation to King Abdullah."

In March, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain withdrew their envoys from Doha, accusing it of supporting organisations that undermine the Gulf's stability and interfering in other states' affairs.

But in a summit held in the Saudi capital Riyadh earlier this month to discuss the fall out, the three Gulf states – all members of the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) – agreed to send back their ambassadors, ending a dispute between the Arab Gulf allies.

Shoukry said that Egypt seeks to have "strong and friendly relations with its Arab brothers," calling on Qatar to abide by the arrangements reached in the Riyadh summit.

"As Egypt is eager to be an active player in protecting Arab national security, we wish and believe that all Arab countries care about Egypt's interests and security," the foreign minister said.

Egypt's top diplomat also spoke about the situation in Libya, describing the situation in the war-torn North African country as "dangerous." He referenced the initiative issued during a ministerial meeting with Libya's neighbours held in Cairo in August.

"The initiative encourages national dialogue between all parties that renounces violence and seeks the unity of Libya's territory," said Shoukry.

He argued that Libya's parliament – and the government formed of it – enjoys legitimacy, which represents the "willingness of the people based on free and democratic elections."

He said that all "international actors recognise the legitimacy" of Prime Minister Abdullah Al-Thinni's government and called for respect for the results of Libyan ballot boxes.

Shoukry asserted that violence is still adopted by some groups that seek to "impose their will over Libyans" by using their "military achievements" as grounds to enter dialogue.

The minister said that Egypt backs the endeavours of the United Nations special envoy to Libya, Bernardino Leon, to reach a political solution and open room for national dialogue.

Since the ouster of Muammar Gaddafi in the 2011 uprising, Libya has failed to maintain control over armed militias that managed to remove the long-time dictator from power.

Qatar has become isolated from its surroundings Gulf. And its political role receded after June 30-
